This RWJF-supported study, sought to develop a communication tool to facilitate cost-of-care conversations between clinicians and patients when considering care and treatment options. Our aim was to improve transparency of the out-of-pocket costs likely to be incurred by pregnant women throughout the prenatal, delivery and postpartum stages.

What we did:

My role:

I conducted field research, involving clinicians and patients. And worked on the prototype that was tested and refined with stakeholder feedback.

Tool Overview

A projective technique was used to gather consumer insights.
We created a communication tool prototype, which served as an effective way to transcend communication barriers.
We were able to capture accurate information of what people think and feel, which was not possible with direct questioning.
At times, patients were unaware of their underlying motives and attitudes which this tool managed to extract.

Data analysis and synthesis

Using grounded theory research method to discover emerging patterns of data.
Using inter-coder reliability checks, hours were spent to organize the data and to develop a shared understanding of the insights generated.
